Understanding ADHD in Teens
Teens with ADHD often struggle with executive functioning which includes organization time management and emotional regulation. One of the biggest misconceptions about ADHD is that it is just an inability to focus. In reality it is more about an inability to regulate focus. A teen might hyper-focus on a video game for hours but struggle to read a single page of a history textbook. As a parent the best thing you can do is provide structure without being overbearing. Work with your teen to create systems that make sense to them. Use visual reminders break large tasks into smaller steps and celebrate the small wins. Remember their brain is wired differently and that is okay. With the right support and strategies teens with ADHD can thrive both academically and socially.
